지난 11월 9일, 뮤직 갤러리에서 한국의 판소리꾼 배일동 명창과 타악인 김동원 교수의 "만일 화산이 노래할 수 있다면" 공연이 열렸습니다.
오픈 이어즈 페스티벌, 월프리드 로리에 음악 대학, 뮤직 갤러리가 공동 주최한 이번 행사는 오후 7시 “땡큐, 마스터 킴”의 특별 상영으로 시작하여, 8:30분 라이브 판소리 공연으로 막을 내렸습니다.
배일동 명창은 폭포 아래서 목청을 단련시키는 판소리의 전통 방식대로, 7년간 매일 산속 오두막에서 잠을 자며 18시간 동안 폭포수 아래에서 수련하여 폭포목청이란 별명을 가지고 있습니다.
김동원 교수는 한국 전통 타악기의 거장이자 음악인으로, 현재 국제적으로 알려진 “실크 로드 앙상블”에서 첼리스트 요요마와 함께 정기적으로 공연하고 있습니다. 이날 공연에서 두 거장은 영어 자막과 함께 “심청가”를 선보여 토론토 관객들에게 큰 호응을 얻었습니다.
이날 공연에 앞서 상영된 "땡큐 마스터 킴"은 호주의 유명 재즈 드러머가 우연히 한국 판소리꾼의 음악을 접한 후 그를 찾아가는 여정을 그린 영화입니다. 엠마 프란즈 (Emma Franz)가 2009년 감독한 이 작품은 브라질 상파울루 국제 영화제에서 데뷔했으며, 세계 여러 영화제에서 수상을 하는 등 전세계 영화팬들로부터 좋은 반응을 얻은 작품입니다.
On November 9th Bae Il-Dong and Percussionist Professor, Kim Dong-Won, held their “If Volcanoes Could Sing” performance at the Music Gallery.
The event was hosted by Open Ears Festival, Wilfred Laurier University Faculty of Music and the Music Gallery. The event opened at 7 pm with a special screening of “Thank You, Master Kim” followed by the live Pansori performance at 8:30pm.
Master Bae Il-Dong trained his voice through the traditional method of singing under a waterfall. He slept in a hut in the mountains for 7 years, and practiced singing under a waterfall for 18 hours, every day – which is how he developed his nickname, the voice of a waterfall/ waterfall voice.
Professor Kim Dong-Won is a master in traditional percussion as well as a musician who regularly performs with Cellist Yo-Yo Ma as a member of the internationally acclaimed “Silk Road Ensemble”. With English subtitles, the two masters showcased “Simcheongga” which was very well received by the audience in Toronto.
“Thank You Master Kim”, which screened prior to the performance, is about a famous Australian Jazz Drummer’s search for an elusive Korean Pansori Singer. Directed by Emma Franz in 2009, the film debuted at the Brazil Sao Paulo International Film Festival and was awarded by various film festivals around the world. The film has also received great feedback from international film lovers.
