지난 20일 오후 5시 토론토한인회관에서 조희용 주캐나다 한국대사가 동포간담회를 가졌습니다.
한인 단체장과 동포 200여명이 참석한 이날 간담회에서 조희용 대사는 부임 이 후 2년 동안의 활동사항과 박근혜 대통령의 국빈방문 성과에 대한 보고 등 지속적으로 발전중인 한캐 수교관계에 대해 설명했습니다. 또한 최근 많은 관심을 받고 있는 한캐 FTA 자유무역협정에 대해서도 설명했습니다.
강연 후 마련 된 질의 응답시간에는 이민자 감소 문제에 대한 대책, 탈북자 문제, FTA가 한인사회에 미치는 영향 등에 대한 문답이 오고 갔습니다. 조 대사는 이민자 감소의 원인으로 캐나다의 이민 정책과 역이민을 꼽았으며 대사관은 앞으로 양국의 인적교류 활성화를 위해 최선을 다할 것이라 전했습니다.조 대사는 이어 양국간의 전략적인 관계에 따른 변화와 경제적인 교류에도 힘쓸 것이라 전했습니다.
조희용 대사의 부임 후 처음 갖은 토론토 동포간담회에 참석한 한인들은 질의응답시간에 적극적으로 참여하는 모습을 보였습니다. 일부 한인들은 앞으로도 주재상사 및 공관과 자주 소통할 수 있는 기회가 마련되길 바란다는 의견을 전했습니다.
Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Canada, Cho Hee-Yong, held a Korean extariate meeting on November 20th at 5:00 PM, at the Korean Canadian Cultural Association.
About 200 Korean-Canadians were in attendance. Ambassador Cho Hee-Yong informed the group about his activities over the past two years since being appointed to the position. He reported on the outcomes of President Park Geun Hye’s state visit as well as the ongoing development of Korean-Canadian diplomatic relations. He also provided information about the Korean-Canadian free trade agreement (FTA) which has recently been a topic of great interest.
His lecture was followed by a Q&A session where many issues were discussed, including the measures surrounding the decrease in immigrants, issues around North Korean defectors, and the effects of the FTA on the Korean community. Ambassador Cho pointed to Canadian immigration policies and 역이민 as the cause of the decrease in immigrants. The embassy stated that it will do its best to revitalize the exchange of human resources for both countries.
Ambassador Cho continued by stating that more effort will be put towards economic exchange and a change towards more strategic relations between the two countries.
This Korean residence abroad meeting was the first to take place in Toronto since Ambassador Cho Hee-Yong’s appointment to the position. All the Korean members in attendance displayed active engagement throughout the Q&A session. In part, the Korean members hope for expatiate business as well as diplomatic office more opportunities for communication.
