지난 12월 19일 토론토 성 김안드레아 성당에서 한맘 청년 창작 뮤지컬, '베들레헴의 잠 못 이루는 밤'이 공연됐습니다.
이번 뮤지컬은 한맘성당 청년들과 주일학교 어린이들로 구성된 단원들의 무대로 성탄 분위기에 맞는 조명과 의상,
캐롤과 성가, 팝 그리고 K-Pop 등 다양한 장르의 음악들을 선보이며 화려한 볼거리로 크리스마스 뮤지컬로서 손색없는
수준 높은 무대를 보였줬습니다.
이번 창작뮤지컬의 총감독을 맡은 장희용씨는 시간과 공간을 초월해 예수의 탄생이 지금 우리의 삶 가운데였다면,
우리가 그 시대의 양치기들이었다면 하는 가정을 두고 꾸며진 희극으로 공통점 하나없는 네 명의 주인공,
수, 후, 민, 설 그들의 갈등을 통해 현대 삶속에서의 새로운 성탄의 의미를 전하고자 했다고 밝혔습니다.

평범한 인생에 회의를 느끼고 현실적인 성공과 결혼에 대해 고민하고 있는 수, 많은 것을 가졌지만 끊임없이 군중들
사이에서 관심과 부러움의 대상이 되고자하는 후, 착하고 대인관계가 좋지만 넉넉치 않은 가정형편에 아침, 저녁으로
빵집에서 아르바이트를 하는 민, 그리고 예쁘지 않은 외모에 말주변도 없어서 항상 자신감 없는 설 등 4명의 주인공들은
공연 내내 재치있는 연기와 뮤지컬 배우 못지 않은 노래실력으로 관객들에게 큰 호응을 얻었습니다.

크리스마스의 참 의미를 돌아볼 수 있도록 이끈 한맘성당의 창작 뮤지컬은 현대 분위기에 맞는 크리스마스 뮤지컬의
참신한 해석과 피날레로 참석한 관객들에게 훈훈한 감동과 추억을 선사했습니다.
On Dec.19, the musical “Sleepless night in Bethlehem’ was held at St. Andrew Kim
Catholic Church.
The musical was created by St. Andrew Kim Catholic Church youth group members
and it featured various genres of music such as Christmas carols, hymns, and K-pop
with many visual motifs that added to the high quality performance.
The director Peter Chang stated that the musical was based on a premise
‘what if Jesus was born in present day transcending time and space’,
‘what if we were the shepherds?’ and the story is told through a conflict among
four individuals, Soo, Hu, Min Seol, who have nothing in common and it attempts
put a different spin on the meaning of Christmas in our modern day.

Soo thinks his ordinary life is futile and ponders upon the realistic notion of success
and marriage. Hu is rich yet he still aspires to become the subject of envy.
Min is very social but he has to work part time at a pastry because his family is poor.
Seol is not confident with her looks and her social skills. These four characters’ engaging performance garnered a great reception from the audience throughout the show.

The St. Andrew Kim Catholic Church’s musical warmed the hearts of the audience
with a fresh interpretation of the true meaning of Christmas in our modern time.
