Ontario’s biggest medical lab company says early access will help patients be better informed when talking with their doctors.

For the first time, some patients using Ontario laboratory testing centres will be able to access their results online.

Canadian laboratory testing company LifeLabs has announced the launch of an online portal, called My Results, which will allow patients to access their medical test results 24 to 48 hours after testing.
The new portal will only offer results from LifeLabs centres, which is Ontario’s biggest medical lab company.

The Ontario Association of Medical Laboratories estimates there are 325 licensed laboratories and specimen collection centres across the province, 240 of which are owned by LifeLabs.

The company, which operates 19 facilities in Toronto, first started testing the website in Peterborough and Stratford last December in a bid to help patients be better informed.

“Access to lab test results gives Canadians the practical information they need to help manage their health, make informed decisions and engage in more productive conversations with their healthcare providers,” Sue Paish, president and CEO of LifeLabs, said in a press release.

Despite privacy concerns that come with a move online, LifeLabs believes its system is secure.
Toronto family doctor Jeff Habert said that, in his experience working with electronic health records, online medical information is safe.

“There are so many layers of firewalls and so many privacy and security regulations now,” he said, adding new security technology is part of the reason why a system like My Resultsis only possible now.

Patients who want to get their results via the portal will need to register online, provide their personal information to LifeLabs and pick a password. To access results, they’ll need to also input a health card number, answer a security question and/or input a lab visit date and number.

The system is similar to My eHealth, a portal already in operation in British Columbia.

So what are the benefits? LifeLabs says patients who used the portal felt more informed and better prepared to discuss their health with health-care providers in a follow-up visit.

Habert, who is familiar with the website, described the move as a “win-win” for both patients and physicians.
“I’m excited for the patients,” he said. “It’ll allow them to be involved in their own health care, which I think is always a positive thing.”

Habert said the portal will be especially helpful for people suffering with chronic conditions, such as diabetes or kidney disease, who require monthly lab tests.

A recent report from the Advisory Panel on Healthcare Innovation stated that 80 per cent of Canadians would like access to their health information online.

The paper compared its findings to survey results from Ipsos Reid in 2010 and 2013, which indicated only 4 per cent of Canadians actually had such access.

Not all tests will be available through My Results.
Cytology, histology, genetics cytology, genetics, FOBT- ColonCancerCheck, ECGs, Holters, Public Health Laboratory tests and tests referred to other specialty laboratories will be sent directly to physicians and not shared with patients online.

Certain test results should be reviewed “in collaboration with a healthcare provider,” a spokesperson for LifeLabs explained in an email.

Habert said he hopes similar systems will be adopted across Canada, making patients partners with their physicians in their health care.

“LifeLabs is a very, very large lab so eventually this will have to move across the country,” he said. “Patients will demand it. Patients want to be involved in their care.”
